Video Games Can Teach Real Drum Abilities

July 27, 2010 by: admin

Video gaming systems have really advanced since we first played Pong, PacMan and all of the other classics. Who thought back years ago that some day soon video games could be used to teach real skills or become so realistic and technologically improved?

Guitar Hero is one video game that is fun to do, but they also say at Harmonix Music that if you master the Rock Band drum set on the ‘hard’ setting, you can pretty much play the drums for real! But really are you really drumming, or just copying the pattern you see on the screen? If you are able to play along with the video game, that does not translate into the real world and does not mean you will be able to play a real drum kit. To play real drums you need to be able to read music. which you won’t learn playing a game; excellent coordination and rhythm. If you can’t read music you may never be able to be a professional unless you are musically gifted and have the instincts to know what to play. Most bands these days no longer use electronic drum kits such as were popular in the 80′s. Real drums give the musician creativity over the volume, pitch and duration of the drum note and cymbals.

One thing real drums won’t need is Guitar Hero World Tour cymbal cable, as they don’t have cables that are too short and breaks all the time.

The simplest drum setups are more difficult to play than the Guitar Hero World Tour game or Rock Band drum kit. For a non-musician, I’m sure the mental image of a real drum kit is overwhelming! Ponder for a moment you’re sitting behind agigantic drum kit, with the knowledge that your band and screaming fans all rely on you. If you’re able to play professionally you might be a awesome drummer, but for a new musician even the Guitar Hero or Rock Band drum set can be overwhelming. Learning drumming starts with knowing have to keep the beat. So being able to tap your feet means you’re a drummer? Not necessarily. Quality drummers can add to songs with their skills as well as just setting the beat for the band else to follow. You may not always think about the drums, but if you were to remove them out of the song I think you would notice for sure!

So, will a video game teach you to play like a pro? Doubtful, but it can’t hurt to practice. Learn drumming basics by playing the Xbox games, practice your counting out the beat, and you will be starting your one way journey to the top!
