Sometimes the way to preserve food with dry ice is much better than with placing oxygen packets into your food storage containers. But many times people get confused about this way of preserving food and simply don’t know where to get the dry ice. Some people are afraid to use it because they might not know all the detail about the procedure and think it is too complicated to use. They are frightened about making any mistakes when it comes to using dry ice. But, there is really nothing to be scared of when you use dry ice. All you need is a tablespoon of dry ice for the gallon size container. So, you will require only a small amount of dry ice for your five gallon buckets you want to seal.
When you are going to seal the bucket with grain you should pour a small amount of grain into the bucket and then add the dry ice. This will help to prevent the bottom of the bucket from cracking from the ice. After this procedure you can fill up the bucket with the more grain. Put the lid on the top of the bucket loosely and wait for about half an hour. Then push the lid onto the bucket and wait for another half an hour to make sure there are no bulges of the lid. If there are any bulges appeared all you have to do is lift the small area of the lid up in order to let some excess air to escape and then press the lid back.
As you can see the process is quite easy and if you watch the containers from time to time during the first couple of hours after sealing you will not make a mistake. This will help you be aware if there are any changes in the container. In a couple more hours you can use a rubber hammer to tap the lid in place completely. Now your storage containers are ready.
Remember that dry ice tends to evaporate very quickly and if you purchase it in the evening it will evaporate by morning. So, it would be wise to get your containers ready and then go and get your dry ice. When you come home you can quickly place them in your buckets and then fill up your containers. Other than that there is nothing tricky about using the dry ice for your food preservation.
